The first footage from Children of Blood and Bone has officially debuted at CinemaCon, and by all accounts, Gina Prince-Bythewood is scaling up in a major way.

Described by attendees as sweeping, visually ambitious, and packed with high-stakes action, the trailer signals a bold evolution of the filmmaker’s signature style. Building on the grounded intensity of The Woman King, Prince-Bythewood leans fully into fantasy here, delivering a world that is both mythic and politically charged.

Set in the kingdom of Orisha, the film introduces audiences to a land divided into clans with distinct magical abilities. Some wield the elements, controlling water, fire, wind, and earth, while others possess gifts like healing or foresight. But magic has been violently suppressed under the rule of King Saran, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, whose reign of terror has fractured the kingdom.

According to Variety, the trailer at Cinemacon shows at the center of the story is Zélie, portrayed by Thuso Mbedu, who seeks to restore magic and unite Orisha. The trailer offers glimpses of her journey alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Tosin Cole as her brother Tzain, Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, and Damson Idris as Prince Inan. There are different clans, with different abilities. Some people can manipulate water, fire, wind and earth, while others can heal injuries or see into the past or future.

The cast alone signals the film’s scale, with appearances from Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, and Regina King, among others. Many of these actors previously collaborated with Prince-Bythewood on The Woman King, and that shared history is evident in the physicality and cohesion seen in the footage.

According to descriptions The Wrap from the presentation, one standout moment arrives at the end of the trailer, when a character assembles a massive creature from trees and branches to battle an advancing army. It is a striking display of the film’s visual effects and its embrace of large-scale fantasy spectacle.

Still, the director emphasized that the film’s emotional core remains rooted in character and connection. Her approach to training actors as athletes once again plays a key role, allowing performers to execute their own stunts and build authentic on-screen chemistry. With its blend of political allegory, elemental magic, and epic action, Children of Blood and Bone is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious fantasy adaptations in recent years.

The film arrives in theaters on January 15.
