According to CNN’s Africa Correspondent, Larry Madowo, the overall feeling toward President Donald Trump across the African continent is a prime example of this complex dynamic.
In a recent clip discussing the global political climate, CNN’s Africa Correspondent Larry Madowo shed light on Donald Trump‘s reputation in Africa, revealing that the former president holds a significant level of support.
“President Trump is surprisingly much beloved in Africa, and people don’t realize this,” Madowo explained. While Trump’s rhetoric and policies have been polarizing in the West, Madowo points out that his appeal on the continent is largely rooted in shared social and religious conservatism.
“Part of the reason why President Trump is beloved in Africa is because he’s got a strong opposition to abortion. People feel like he probably is not pro-LGBT rights,” Madowo noted. Because many populations across Africa are deeply religious, whether Christian or Muslim, many people feel that Trump represents the conservative values they inherently agree with.

However, Madowo was quick to clarify that this popularity exists alongside the very real, often negative impacts of Trump’s administrative policies.
He pointed out that Trump made several decisions that directly impacted Africans, specifically concerning immigration and foreign aid. He cited visa restrictions and significant cuts to USAID, which had immediate, tangible consequences on the ground.
Madowo provided an example of the fallout from these cuts: “In Cameroon… maybe 600,000 people might not have food in the next few months because of the aid cuts that affect USAID and foreign aid by the United States.”
Despite the harsh realities of those foreign policies, Trump’s larger-than-life persona continues to resonate with many. Madowo observed that when traveling across the continent, people simply “like that he speaks his mind.”
Interestingly, Madowo also credited Trump’s early reality TV fame as a major factor in his continued popularity. Long before he entered the Oval Office, Trump was a familiar face in African households. “They remember him from The Apprentice,” Madowo said, adding that the show was “very well syndicated across Africa.”
