Commemorating America’s first National Martyrs Day

On July 5, I will be joining Dr. Gloria Browne-Marshall, Gwen Howze, and other panelists at Riverside Church for America’s first National Martyrs Day celebration.

The event will honor such noted martyrs as Malcolm X, John Brown, Medgar Evers, Viola Liuzzo, Rev. James Reeb, Vernon Dahmer, and First Lt. Richard W. Collins III with a ceremony headed by the panelists, two of whom are related to a fallen martyr, along with music, followed by a reception and book signing.

Under the rubric of “Martyrs, Memory, and Recommitment,” the panelists will recount their relationship to the martyrs, and the extent to which their courage and devotion was foundational in the panelists’ lives.

While I am prepared to discuss each one of them, my task is to focus on my history with Malcolm X and the deep influence he has had on my social and political development. Of the listed martyrs, his life and legacy is perhaps best known, so it will be rewarding to learn more about the others. The event is slated to begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 5 at Riverside Church (91 Claremont Avenue).
