The death toll in the crash that involved a bakkie and a bus on the N2 near Peddie in the Eastern Cape has risen to five.

Four of the deceased were occupants of the bakkie, the fifth person succumbed to injuries, while the sixth is in hospital in a critical condition.

Several passengers on the bus, which was travelling from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town, sustained minor injuries, while the driver was treated for shock.

The provincial Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says, “This is a devastating crash that has claimed five lives, leaving one person critically injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that have lost their loved ones in this untimely manner. The MEC for transport in the Eastern Cape, Mr Xolile Nqatha, is calling on road users to be extra vigilant and extra cautious at all times to help us prevent these accidents that continue to claim so many lives on our roads.”

Meanwhile, in another crash on the Cape Flats, two people have been killed.

The crash involved four vehicles, including a bus, on Robert Sobukwe Road near Bishop Lavis on Monday morning.

One of the deceased is a pedestrian who was on his way to work.

Police spokesperson, FC Van Wyk, says several people were injured and taken to nearby medical facilities.

He says police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
