Sydney, Australia: A vibrant community celebration was held in Sydney on 12 July to mark Somali Week, an important event held as part of the annual commemorations of Somalia’s Independence. The celebration brought together members of the Somali community from across New South Wales, along with friends of the community, government representatives and distinguished guests in a day that celebrated culture, heritage and community spirit.

Almost 500 people attended the celebration, including members of the Somali community, the wider Australian community, representatives from federal, state and local government, local councillors, community organisations, multicultural leaders and other invited guests.

Mohamed Hassan, President of the Somali Society of NSW and one of the event’s key organisers, highlighted the importance of bringing communities together to celebrate significant milestones such as Somalia’s Independence. He said the event demonstrated the unity, resilience and pride of the Somali community while creating opportunities for cultural exchange, stronger community partnerships and greater engagement with the wider Australian community.

He noted that events such as Somali Week not only celebrate Somalia’s rich cultural heritage but also provide an opportunity for younger generations born or raised in Australia to remain connected to their roots while embracing their Australian identity. He said the celebration reflected the community’s commitment to preserving its traditions and passing them on to future generations.

The event featured speeches from elected representatives, community leaders and distinguished guests, who acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Somali community to Australia and highlighted the importance of preserving Somali culture, heritage and identity. Speakers also recognised the positive role that multicultural events play in promoting social cohesion, mutual understanding and respect among Australia’s diverse communities.

They described the event as a strong reflection of unity, multiculturalism and the growing contribution of Somali Australians to New South Wales, while reinforcing the values of diversity and inclusion that continue to enrich Australian society.
