Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde celebrates 53rd birthday

By Zoila Palma:  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources Cordel Hyde is celebrating his 53rd birthday today, marking another year in a political career spanning more than two decades.

Hyde’s journey in public service began in journalism at Amandala newspaper, founded by his father, Evan X Hyde, before he entered national politics in 1998.

That year, he defeated then-UDP incumbent Hubert Elrington to become the Lake Independence Area Representative.

Since then, Hyde has remained a prominent figure in Belizean politics, maintaining a strong presence in Lake Independence, apart from a brief period away from elected office between 2012 and 2015.

He has also served in several key Cabinet positions, including Minister of Education and Housing under the Said Musa administration.

Hyde’s public and personal journey has included both political achievements and significant challenges, including the heartbreaking loss of his son, Khalid, to cancer.

Today, as Minister of Natural Resources, Hyde has focused on reforming the Lands Ministry and rebuilding public confidence in an institution that has faced longstanding concerns over its operations.

He is recognized for his perseverance and continued commitment to public service and national development.
