Thanks to a watchful community member who had happened to be out for a walk at just the right time and the swift response of a rescue team that followed, a sweet doggo is safe and sound after being stranded on a dangerous cliff.
Hermanus, South Africa (22 May 2026) – On Thursday morning, the NSRI Hermanus duty crew was activated following reports of a dog trapped on the cliffside at Dreunkrans.
The alarm was raised by a local woman who, while out for a walk, heard distress barking coming from the cliff path. On closer inspection, she spotted a dog stranded on a steep incline just below the path and immediately called the NSRI for help.
“I live nearby so I went to take a look, and indeed the dog appeared trapped on a sheer cliff face, and our NSRI crew were activated,” said Edrich Kotze, NSRI Hermanus station commander.
While the concerned woman remained on the scene to monitor the situation, there appeared to be no people in the area who the dog may have belonged to.

The NSRI crew responded swiftly, while the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) was simultaneously alerted and dispatched an animal handler to assist.
Upon arriving at the scene, both teams carefully negotiated the steep, barely accessible terrain to reach the stranded animal.
“In a coordinated effort, we were able to safely get the dog off the cliff to a safe area where the dog was taken into the care of the HAWS animal handler,” Kotze reported.
“The dog has been transported to HAWS for care and rehabilitation while efforts to find the owners are being addressed.”
The rescue operation was successfully concluded by 10:26 am. The NSRI commended both the alert woman who raised the alarm and the invaluable assistance from HAWS.
While it isn’t clear how he got up there in the first place, fortunately, the mixed-breed male dog was uninjured and appeared to be in good health. Thanks to the quick thinking of a watchful community member and the swift teamwork of the rescuers, a frightening ordeal ended not in tragedy, but in the safe, warm embrace of helping hands.
