Driver Killed, 15 Students Injured as School Bus Rams Stationary Trailer

A routine school trip turned tragic in Bugweri District after a bus carrying students rammed into a stationary trailer, killing the driver on the spot and leaving 15 others injured.

The crash, which occurred in the early hours of July 14, 2026, involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UA 551ED, belonging to Amuria High School, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB 269V.

Police identified the deceased as Kasakya Abdallah, 68, the driver of the bus.

ASP Michael Kasadha, the Regional Police Spokesperson Busoga East Region said the bus was transporting 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School, Katakwi, who were heading to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a Geography study tour.

According to preliminary police findings, the accident happened at around 4:45 a.m. at Nawangisa Village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway when the bus rammed into the rear of a stationary trailer.

“The impact killed the driver instantly, while 15 occupants 13 students, a teacher and the conductor sustained injuries of varying severity,” he said.

Traffic police from Busoga East Region rushed to the scene, documented evidence and coordinated rescue efforts.

He said the body of the deceased was taken to Iganga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem, while the injured were admitted to Iganga General Hospital for treatment.

Both the bus and the trailer were towed to Busembatya Police Station for inspection as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue.

Police have since extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during early morning travel.

The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways, where crashes involving stationary or improperly parked vehicles remain a recurring danger.
