Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica reviewed progress in the Egypt-European Union Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and exchanged views on key regional developments, including U.S.-Iran negotiations and broader Middle East security issues.
According to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, political consultations held in Cairo on Saturday assessed developments in Egypt-EU relations since last year’s Egypt-EU Summit and discussed implementation of the six pillars of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of building on the outcomes of both the summit and the 11th Egypt-EU Association Council meeting, held in Luxembourg in mid-June, calling for deeper economic, investment and trade cooperation as a central pillar of the partnership.
He also expressed appreciation for the European Union’s support for Egypt’s economic reform programme and financial stability, as well as continued cooperation in education, scientific research and skills development through initiatives such as Horizon Europe and Erasmus.
The foreign minister called for enhanced cooperation on migration and mobility through a comprehensive, long-term strategic approach that extends beyond short-term crisis management.
Abdelatty also welcomed the launch of the Mediterranean Pact, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening Euro-Mediterranean cooperation. He presented Egypt’s vision for the initiative and outlined a number of proposed projects aimed at advancing shared regional priorities.
Regional developments featured prominently in the talks, with Abdelatty briefing Šuica on Egypt’s assessment of the ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiating process. He stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum generated by the recent memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran to achieve more durable arrangements that enhance regional security and stability while safeguarding freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.
He also underlined the need to refocus international attention on the Palestinian issue to facilitate implementation of the first phase of the U.S. peace plan and advance to the second phase. Abdelatty further outlined Egypt’s positions on the latest developments in Lebanon, Libya and Sudan.
For her part, Šuica reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to deepening its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Egypt, describing the country as a key EU partner in the southern Mediterranean. She praised Egypt’s role in promoting regional security, stability and cooperation across the Mediterranean region.
