Addis Ababa, October 31, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia has highlighted the interconnected challenges of migration, displacement and climate change, advocating an integrated, development-oriented approach grounded in international cooperation, sustainable financing and community resilience at the 39th Session of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Standing Committee on Programmes and Finance (SCPF).
The session, held in Geneva on October 29–30, 2026, provided a platform for Ethiopia to outline its priorities for addressing migration challenges through sustainable solutions that tackle underlying causes while responding to immediate humanitarian needs.
Delivering Ethiopia’s remarks, Permanent Representative to Geneva Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew Daka highlighted the longstanding partnership between Ethiopia and IOM in addressing humanitarian needs, supporting displaced populations and strengthening migration governance.
He emphasized the importance of sustained investment in nationally led initiatives that respond to immediate humanitarian needs while addressing the root causes of displacement and supporting long-term development.
Ambassador Tsegab further underscored the interconnectedness of climate change, migration, displacement and development, highlighting the need for greater investment in anticipatory action, livelihood opportunities and community resilience.
He noted that tackling the underlying causes of irregular migration, particularly among young people, requires coordinated international efforts and sustainable development interventions.
Reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to constructive international cooperation, the Ambassador highlighted the country’s role as a country of origin, transit and destination for migrants, alongside its ongoing efforts to strengthen migration governance through policy and institutional reforms.
Ethiopia emphasized the importance of a comprehensive, development-oriented migration framework supported by effective partnerships, predictable and diversified financing, and shared international responsibility.
