A primary school teacher was killed in a road crash involving a speeding vehicle in Soroti on Saturday afternoon along the Soroti–Mbale highway.

The deceased, John Okello, a primary three teacher at Awoja primary school, was reportedly knocked from behind by a vehicle, registration number UA 508CC, as he attempted to cross the road to access the school.

Robert Etochu, the LC I chairperson of Apuuton village in Awoja parish, raised concerns about the dangerous nature of the highway, particularly around the Awoja trading centre, which he said has witnessed numerous accidents over the years.

“We have alerted the authorities to install speed humps to help reduce over-speeding, but nothing has been done to date. We continue to lose the lives of our people to speeding vehicles on this road,” Etochu lamented.

The driver of the vehicle sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Soroti City for treatment. Traffic police in Soroti have since launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
