*FKA twigs is stepping into the role of legendary entertainer and activist Josephine Baker in a newly announced biopic from filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré, Variety reports.
The project, backed by Studiocanal, is expected to begin filming this fall. The company will also introduce the film to international buyers during the Cannes Film Festival following the official completion of deals for both twigs and Doucouré.
In a statement announcing the casting, twigs spoke about Baker’s lasting influence and the opportunity to portray her onscreen.
“I am honored to collaborate with the immensely talented Maïmouna Doucouré on this incredible project,” the artist said. “Josephine Baker’s extraordinary legacy is such an inspiration to me and to so many people around the world.”
She continued, “She lives on in our hearts as a visionary, groundbreaking woman whose story is as powerful as it is relevant today.”
The film plans to explore multiple chapters of Baker’s life, beginning with her upbringing in St. Louis before her rise to international fame after relocating to Paris in 1925. Beyond her entertainment career, the movie will also focus on her work with the French Resistance during World War II and her later involvement in the American Civil Rights Movement.
Twigs also reflected on the emotional weight of portraying Baker, stating, “I cannot wait to embody Josephine Baker bringing her fight, her love, her losses, her talent and her heroism to the big screen.”
Doucouré, who is writing, directing, and producing the project, described Baker as a deeply layered figure whose story still resonates today.
“Josephine Baker has lived with me for years,” the filmmaker said. “Working on this film, I realize how modern, fearless and complex she was.”
She added, “Beyond the legend, I want to explore her contradictions, her wounds and her immense courage, as well as her relentless fight for dignity.”
Doucouré added: “With the extraordinary FKA Twigs bringing her rare artistry, intelligence and emotional depth to the role, it is a huge honour to work with Studiocanal to bring Josephine’s story to the screen for a global audience: the story of a woman who never stopped reinventing herself and fighting for justice and equality.”
The production is also being developed with support from Baker’s family, including her sons Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker, along with the Rainbow Tribe, the name Baker gave to her adopted children.
