After two targeted incidents where explosives were detonated in stores, a popular retailer enlisted the help of a special four-legged squad to sniff, secure and protect!
South Africa (01 June 2026) – Last week, Woolies was the target of two separate incidents in its Pretoria and Bloemfontein stores, at Menlyn Park and Preller Square.
According to the retailer, ‘improvised explosive devices’ were detonated in both stores, in the early hours of the morning between 1:00 and 2:00 am.
Thankfully, no one was harmed. The SAPS were called in to do immediate sweeps, and the Hawks are investigating. The retailer has boosted its vigilance across all stores and ‘specialist forensic experts’ have been enlisted to strengthen security and intelligence, alongside the work being done by authorities.
Over the weekend, the retailer brought in the most lovable squad to work on the case, in stores nationwide.
“Hi Woolies shoppers, this weekend we had a few esteemed guests in attendance at stores across the country.” the retailer shared. “A big thank you to all the selfless helpers who are working (and sniffing!) hard to keep us all safe.”
The professional K9 units – all of whom are professional service dogs – have swept stores to ensure the safety of staff and shoppers.
“I have to say, of all the action they could have taken, this is the cutest one…” wrote commenter Anzél Schönfeldt.
“Give them each a piece of WW cooked chicken.” shared Lizelle Payne.
“South African best bomb squad on duty!” wrote Natasha Putter Muller
“We’re sure they checked the Biltong section *thoroughly*” joked Alhami Noodles.
