Fuel levy relief to continue till June 2

Government has officially extended the temporary reduction of the fuel levy to shield South Africans from another massive price hike expected next month.

In a joint move to stave off economic pressure, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources have confirmed that the relief measures first introduced in April will now continue.

The general fuel levy-which was slashed by R3 a litre will remain suspended until the 2nd of June.

However, there is an even bigger break for those using diesel. Due to the massive spike in global prices, the National Treasury has announced that diesel will attract no fuel levy at all during this period.

Government estimates the fiscus will lose approximately R17 billion in revenue. The relief is scheduled to be phased out starting in early June.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, “To give people more help and to limit the impact on inflation and economic growth, government has extended the R3 per litre reduction until June 2nd, 2026. Given the large and expected increase in the price of diesel, temporary relief for diesel is increased by 93 cents to R3,93 cents per litre, reducing the levy to zero from Wednesday 6th May 2026 to June 2nd, 2026. The general fuel levy for petrol will remain at 110 cents per litre and the general fuel levy for diesel will decrease from 96 cents per litre to zero per litre.”
