Athletes Committee, Sports Act compliance the focus for 2026 URU AGM

The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has today announced the 2026 Annual General Meeting to be held on Friday, May 1.

According to the URU press release, some of the key aspects to be addressed at the General Assembly include the presentation of the status of Uganda Rugby’s compliance with the 2023 Sports Act, the election of the second women’s representative, and the election of two athletes’ representatives to the Uganda Rugby Executive.

These elective positions are a creation of the 2025 Uganda Rugby Constitution that was approved at the Special General Meeting held on June 1st, 2025. This constitution expands the number of executive members, increasing the number of women’s representatives from 1 to 2.

Additionally, Article 12.6 establishes the Athletes’ Committee, from which two members of the opposite sex shall be elected to the Executive Committee. These two players’ representatives are going to be elected at the Annual General Meeting this Friday.

The  Uganda Rugby Union has been deliberate about aligning with the 2023 Sports Act, the Rugby Africa policy framework and World Rugby regulations and standards. One of the ways they’ve done this is through constant engagement with stakeholders, and whereas this AGM is constitutionally mandated, it is one of those steps in the right direction.

In a statement from URU, the Honorary Secretary Peter Odong notes that he is looking forward to the outcomes of this Assembly.

“The decisions we make today will propel our players, competition and sustainability to new heights, fostering discipline, unity, and pride across our nation. Let us seize this moment to build a legacy that inspires generations,” notes Odong.

The AGM will be chaired by the Uganda Rugby Union president, Godwin Kayangwe, and in attendance shall be other members of the Executive Committee.
