*A recent comedy roast and a political convention have both drawn criticism from George Floyd’s family, which says the incidents reflect continued public controversy surrounding his death.
The latest dispute emerged after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe delivered a joke during a roast featuring Kevin Hart. The remark quickly spread online and drew criticism from many viewers.
“The Black community is so proud of you right now. George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can’t breathe,” Hinchcliffe said.
As we reported earlier, Travis Cains, a spokesman for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation, described Hinchcliffe’s jokes as “sad for the culture.” Family members and supporters also expressed outrage over the use of Floyd’s death as comedic material.
Hart later addressed the public backlash to the joke during an interview. He acknowledged that the material “wasn’t tasteful,” while defending the nature of roast comedy. He also rejected the idea that he should have stepped in during the performance.
“What do you want me to do? Drag him off? That’s not what I agreed to do,” Hart said.
Floyd is connected to another controversy that unfolded in Minnesota. Delegates attending the Minnesota Republican Party’s state convention in Duluth observed a 10-second moment of silence for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, TheGrio reports.
Cains criticized the gesture and said Floyd’s relatives viewed the recognition of Chauvin as deeply troubling. “To put a guy on the pedestal and hold a moment of silence for him is insane. The whole world knows that the public lynching of George Floyd was tragic,” he told TMZ.
Chauvin remains in prison following his 2021 conviction in connection with Floyd’s death. Video recorded during Floyd’s May 25, 2020 arrest in Minneapolis showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck, footage that was widely viewed across the world. The incident prompted global protests and became a landmark event in conversations about racial justice and policing in the United States.
