‘God heard you’: Teboho Mokoena weeps during anthem [watch]

Teboho Mokoena – the Bafana Bafana star who scored the team’s crucial goal against Czechia – was seen weeping during the South African national anthem just minutes before.

The player has been praised for both his passion for the country and his pristine penalty kick, which secured an equaliser.

Bafana will play their third and final FIFA World Cup group-stage match against South Korea on Thursday, 25 June, at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico.

TEBOHO MOKOENA EMOTIONAL DURING SA NATIONAL ANTHEM

In clips posted online, a close-up of Teboho Mokoena shedding tears during the national anthem went viral.

While many players appeared nonchalant, the 29-year-old was visibly emotional as the camera panned across the line-up.

The touching moment had many South Africans on social media beaming with pride.

@ItsMomoMashhh: “Seeing this makes the goal even more special. He took a lot of heat recently, but he let his heart and his boots do the talking!”

@AquaLouw: “God heard you, my boy”

@LudweTweets: “He knew what was at stake, that’s why he stepped on”

HOW CAN BAFANA ADVANCE OUT OF THE GROUP STAGES?

With South Africa drawing against Czechia, many football fans want to know if Bafana Bafana stand a chance at making it out of the FIFA World Cup group stages.

The draw leaves South Africa on 1 point from two matches, with a goal difference of -2.

The best chances of Bafana progressing would be for them to beat South Korea. That would leave South Africa on 4 points and possibly in second or third place. This would be enough to reach the Round of 32 either automatically or as one of the best third-placed teams.

The results of Mexico’s matches also play a big role in Bafana’s chances if they win against South Korea and draw or win against Czechia.

A draw against South Korea will leave South Africa short of the points needed to progress, while a loss would ultimately end their World Cup dream.

Sadly, Teboho Mokoena will miss Bafana’s next game against South Korea after receiving a second yellow card during the match. He will be replaced by Yaya Sithole, who will return after sitting out the Czechia game.
