Guinea has taken a major step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure following the signing of a contract for the construction and maintenance of a second submarine fibre-optic cable, aimed at expanding national connectivity capacity.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Amadou Oury BAH, who described the project as a key milestone for the country’s digital future. The new infrastructure comes 13 years after the installation of Guinea’s first submarine fibre-optic cable, which is now approaching saturation due to rising demand for internet services and data consumption.
According to the Prime Minister, the project is expected to significantly enhance the country’s connectivity and support broader economic growth. He noted that Guinea’s digital infrastructure must evolve in line with increasing demand from both consumers and businesses, particularly as data usage continues to expand rapidly across sectors.
To complement this development, the Ministry of Communications, Digital Economy and Innovation will be tasked with accelerating efforts to triple the country’s current internet access capacity. The ministry will also focus on ensuring the network is not only expanded but also made economically sustainable and beneficial for the wider population.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the challenge ahead remains substantial, stressing the importance of scaling fibre-optic infrastructure while ensuring it delivers long-term value. He noted that expanding and optimising the network will be critical to supporting Guinea’s digital transformation and broader economic ambitions.
