The Ministry of Health and Social Services says it has received and distributed 33 line items of critically needed medicines and clinical supplies as part of efforts to address immediate stock shortages.
In a public update issued on Thursday, acting executive director Theo-Ben Kandetu says the medicines were received and distributed between 18 June and 1 July.
“Since 18 June 2026, a total of 33 line items of critically needed medicines have been received and distributed throughout the supply chain,” he says.
The deliveries form part of ongoing efforts to replenish medicine stock levels and improve the availability of essential medicines at public health facilities.
According to Kandetu, recent deliveries include multiple cancer medicines to support the treatment and management of patients with cancer, antibiotics for the treatment of various infections, anti-hypertension medication for the treatment of high blood pressure and medicines for the management of diabetes mellitus.
The ministry says some of the medicines received over the past two weeks include amlodipine, erythromycin, metronidazole, insulin, metformin, measles and rubella vaccines and paracetamol syrup.
“The Ministry of Health and Social Services is actively working to procure and distribute urgently needed medicines and clinical supplies,” Kandetu says.
He adds that the primary objective is to address shortages while simultaneously implementing bulk procurement strategies to stabilise the national supply chain over the medium and long term.
The ministry says additional deliveries of essential medicines are expected in the coming weeks as procurement and supply chain interventions continue.
“The ministry will continue to closely monitor stock levels, strengthen management interventions and work with stakeholders to address supply challenges nationwide,” Kandetu says.
