Hot and Wet with El-Nino in the mix: Latest Weather forecast between July and September 2026

High chances of drier than normal conditions should be expected throughout the month of July over most parts of Eastern and the horn of Africa the region.

According to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC)’s latest forecast, an overall drier than normal conditions indicated over most parts of the region from July to September 2026.

The Climate Prediction and Applications Centre also forecasts wetter than normal conditions that are to be expected over areas in western and part of coastal Kenya, southern and northern Uganda, southern and north-western Somalia, southern and north-eastern Ethiopia, central Eritrea, and in southern and north-western Sudan.

The corresponding seasonal temperatures as far as ICPAC is concerned, are expected to be warmer than normal over most parts of the region.

Rainfall Forecast for July 2026

The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is on the other hand​, predicting heavy rains to precipitate between late September 2026 all the way to February 2027.

National Meteorological stations in Kenya and Tanzania have also warned about the looming El-Nino weather spell which could open clouds of showers onto the Eastern African region from late October or early November.

However, ICPAC foresees drier than usual conditions expected over most parts of the region including Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, northern Uganda, western Kenya, north-western and few areas in southern coastal Somalia, 

Wetter than normal conditions expected over isolated areas in southern Somalia and coastal Kenya.

Temperature Forecast for July 2026

Warmer than usual conditions expected over most parts of the region with the highest probabilities over north-western Sudan and part of western Ethiopia.

Cooler than normal conditions are expected over central parts of Somalia.

Seasonal Rainfall Forecast for July to September 2026

Drier than usual conditions are expected over Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, north-western Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, and western Kenya. The highest probabilities are indicated over Ethiopia. 

Seasonal Temperature Forecast for July to September 2026

Warmer than usual temperatures are expected over most parts of the region with highest probabilities over parts of Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.
