*Long before becoming a global movie star, Will Smith was building his reputation in music as part of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. In the late 1980s, the duo gained traction with their album “He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper,” which quickly became a commercial success and introduced them to a wider audience.
As Screen Rant reports, among the standout tracks was “A Nightmare on My Street,” a song that leaned heavily into horror storytelling. The lyrics describe a terrifying encounter with a character resembling Freddy Krueger, referred to as “Fred,” including the memorable description of a villain who is “burnt up like a weenie.” The track also included recognizable elements from the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, weaving in references that fans of the films would easily recognize.
Originally, the duo intended for the song to be featured in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.” However, New Line Cinema ultimately declined to include it, opting instead for a different track by the Fat Boys. That decision set off a chain of events that would quickly escalate beyond music.
After releasing the song independently, legal action followed. New Line Cinema issued a cease-and-desist order, claiming the track infringed on their intellectual property. The court sided with the studio, determining the song too closely mirrored the franchise and appeared to capitalize on its popularity.
Rather than prolong the dispute, a settlement was reached, allowing the song to remain available with clear disclaimers distancing it from the film series. Despite the controversy, the track resonated with listeners and contributed to the album’s triple platinum success.
