By Zoila Palma: The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) Delegation in Belize, in collaboration with Zamorano University in Honduras, hosted a five-day theoretical and practical workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of Belizean milk producers and supporting a more sustainable and resilient dairy industry.
The workshop, held from August 11 to 15, 2026, was organized following a request for support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries. It brought together representatives from Belize’s northern and western dairy private sector, technical personnel from the Ministry’s Agroprocessing Unit and IICA Belize.
Participants received both classroom instruction and hands-on training in areas including sustainable milk production, livestock practices, forage management, feed use, milk quality and food safety, dairy microbiology and processing. The training also covered the production of cheese, yogurt and cream, quality control, cleaning and sanitation systems, and the sustainable use of whey and other dairy by-products.
The workshop also included technical visits to dairy facilities, where participants gained practical exposure to dairy cattle management, feed mills, calf facilities, milking parlors, laboratories and dairy processing operations.
IICA Belize said the initiative responds to “the need to build a more productive, competitive, sustainable and resilient dairy industry in Belize by equipping producers and technical personnel with practical tools to improve production, product quality and diversification”. IICA reaffirmed its commitment to working with national and regional partners to support Belize’s agriculture sector.
