Moved by the suffering of abandoned dogs in Alexandra, Phumzile Mnguni started the Gomora Dog Association, an organisation that is giving vulnerable dogs the care, dignity and second chance they deserve.
Alexandra, South Africa (15 May 2026) – Troubled by the number of dogs suffering and being abandoned on the streets of Alexandra, Phumzile Mnguni felt compelled to take action.
“As a born-and-raised Alex resident, I knew our dogs deserved dignity too,” Phumzile tells us.
It is that very conviction that led to the founding of the Gomora Dog Association (GDA) in the heart of the township, starting with just a few volunteers, a bag of dog food and the belief that, in Gomora, dogs are family.
The non-profit animal welfare organisation now conducts outreach and weekly feeding programmes for pets in struggling households. The team also provides veterinary care, including mange treatment, tick and flea dips, deworming, vaccinations and emergency vet visits for injured animals.
They also partner with vets for sterilisation drives to help reduce overpopulation and suffering, and prioritise community education, teaching pet owners about basic canine care, kindness, and the importance of sterilisation.
Many dogs’ lives have been changed through GDA’s tireless efforts. One such dog is Lu Cee, found by Phumzile wandering the streets. She was malnourished, with a painful ear infection, and a deep mistrust of people.
“You could see life had been hard on her. Together with my husband and children, we gave her love, food, a warm bed, and a family. Slowly, she started to trust again. In turn, she gave us so much joy. Till today, she’s my baby Lu,” Phumzile shares.
Lu Cee’s transformation is what Phumzile believes so many other dogs in Alexandra deserve.
“Lu Cee reminded me why we do this. We also deeply appreciate the people in our community who are trying to give these dogs homes, and we want to lend a helping hand to them whenever we can.”
The dog association will be hosting a Dog Walk Day on 18 July, inviting the community to stretch their legs with their furry companions. Attendees can expect a fun-filled family day featuring music, children’s activities, dog training, prizes and of course – a walk for purpose.

As part of the event, GDA will also be accepting donations of old blankets, pet toys, dog food and leashes and collars.
“Right now, our biggest needs are dry pellets and tinned food for daily feeding routes, medical supplies, towels and shampoo for our upcoming Wash Day, as well as funding for sterilisation and deworming,” Phumzile explains.
Her hope and dream is to see dogs off the streets and in loving homes where their dignity is restored, their well-being a top priority, and their tails wagging happily.
