By Zoila Palma: Jamaica is in discussions with the United States over a proposed arrangement that would see the Caribbean nation accept third-country migrants deported by U.S. authorities, Reuters report.
Jamaica’s National Security Minister Horace Chang confirmed on Tuesday that negotiations are ongoing, but noted that the deal has not yet been finalized.
According to Chang, the proposed arrangement would take the form of a memorandum of understanding rather than a legally binding agreement.
He emphasized that respect for human rights would remain a central principle of the arrangement and said Jamaica had drawn lessons from similar agreements implemented in Belize, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis.
Under the proposed deal, Jamaica would serve as a transit country for deportees from the United States. The country would receive up to 25 migrants every two weeks while hosting no more than 10 individuals at any one time as authorities arrange onward travel to another country or the migrants’ home nation. Chang also stated that individuals with criminal backgrounds would not be accepted under the arrangement.
The proposal comes amid a broader deportation effort by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which has secured agreements with several countries to host deportees of other nationalities.
