International News: Jamaica welcomes 43 nurses from Ghana

By Zoila Palma: Jamaica has received its first batch of healthcare workers from Ghana as the country continues efforts to strengthen its healthcare workforce and improve the delivery of health services.

The 43 nurses arrived at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston today, The Gleaner reports.

The nurses specialize in several areas, including critical care, pediatrics, operating theatre, nursing and midwifery, emergency care, oncology, and mental health and psychiatry. They will be assigned to public hospitals across Jamaica, with most expected to serve facilities under the Western Regional Health Authority and South East Regional Health Authority.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton welcomed the arrival, describing the first cohort as an important step in strengthening Jamaica’s healthcare workforce. The nurses will also serve in the other two health regions and at the University Hospital of the West Indies, as part of Jamaica’s Vision for Health 2030 and its Human Resource for Health Stabilization Strategy.

Jamaica and Ghana signed a four-year bilateral health cooperation agreement in May, targeting the recruitment and temporary deployment of 400 Ghanaian healthcare workers, particularly nurses and doctors.
