International News: Mexican Navy rescues 2 fishermen after 5 days drifting in Pacific

By Zoila Palma:  The Mexican Navy has rescued two fishermen who spent five days drifting in the Pacific Ocean after being found sitting on a cooler more than 240 kilometers off the coast of Chiapas.

The men, ages 53 and 32, were located approximately 130 nautical miles offshore, according to Mexican authorities.

The fishermen had set out in a boat to fish, but contact with them was lost on August 14. The search began after members of a local fishing cooperative alerted authorities and requested assistance in locating the missing men.

The Navy launched a search operation involving an aircraft, an interceptor boat, and a patrol vessel.

Rescue teams eventually spotted the two men in the open ocean, where they were found sitting on a cooler. Authorities did not provide details about what happened to their fishing boat or how the men survived the five days at sea.

A Navy offshore patrol vessel reached the location and brought the fishermen aboard, where medical personnel evaluated them.
