By Zoila Palma: Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has announced that the country will no longer hold elections, a move that would eliminate the possibility of an electoral challenge when his current term ends and further consolidate the power he shares with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo.
Ortega, who has remained in power since 2007 after previously serving as president in the 1980s, said the decision would close the door to any opposition takeover.
However, he did not provide specific details on how the change would be implemented or what political system would replace the electoral process, Reuters report.
The announcement comes amid growing international criticism of Ortega and Murillo’s government.
The United Nations Human Rights Council has accused Nicaragua’s leadership of transforming the country into an authoritarian state and carrying out systematic human rights violations.
