International News: Taiwan warns of rising Chinese vessel activity, plans Pacific supply route drills

By Zoila Palma:  Taiwan has reported a sharp increase in Chinese coast guard and research vessel activity around the island, raising concerns in Taipei that Beijing may be testing strategies to disrupt vital supply routes in the event of a conflict.

Taiwan Coast Guard data showed 55 sightings of Chinese government vessels in June, compared with 30 in May and 25 during the same month last year, Reuters report.

The figures represent an 83% increase from May and a 120% rise compared with June 2025. The data does not include activity near Taiwan-controlled islands close to China. Taiwanese officials said the growing presence of Chinese coast guard vessels highlights Beijing’s expanding use of maritime forces to reinforce its territorial claims.

Taipei has accused China of using “lawfare” by attempting to establish a legal justification for operations around Taiwan.

Officials said the increased patrols could be linked to preparations for a potential blockade scenario aimed at cutting off Taiwan’s Pacific supply routes and limiting access to allied support.

A senior Taiwan Coast Guard official said the government has developed contingency plans with the navy, including tabletop exercises and live drills, to protect the island’s maritime lifelines.
