By Zoila Palma:  The United Nations has warned that a growing climate of fear over U.S. sanctions is preventing vital humanitarian aid from reaching Cuba, leaving hospitals, schools and vulnerable communities without essential supplies.

Francisco Pichon, the UN resident coordinator in Cuba, said shipping companies, insurers and banks are increasingly avoiding transactions involving the island to reduce the risk of U.S. penalties.

Pichon told AFP that the situation has resulted in “overcompliance,” forcing humanitarian organizations to reroute shipments and delay deliveries.

He said a recent shipment of medicine used to treat childhood cancer could not reach Cuba because refrigerated transportation was unavailable in time, while reproductive-health kits and containers carrying medicines and school supplies were also returned or diverted.

The humanitarian crisis has been worsened by severe fuel shortages and power outages.
