By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Coast Guard opened fire to disable a vessel carrying 25 Chinese nationals after it refused to stop near the Florida coast.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the incident occurred on June 10, about one mile south of Key Biscayne, when the boat failed to comply with Coast Guard orders during an interdiction operation.
DHS said crews from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach initially deployed warning shots in an attempt to stop the vessel.
When those efforts proved unsuccessful, officers used disabling fire to halt the boat. Authorities reported that no injuries occurred during the operation, Fox reports.
Following the interdiction, the 25 Chinese nationals were transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell for processing, while the vessel was seized and towed to Station Miami Beach.
Special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations launched a criminal investigation into the attempted illegal entry, with support from Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations.
