ISMAILI CIVIC, in partnership with food banks across British Columbia, has collected and distributed more than 13,900 pounds of nutritious, non-perishable food to help families facing food insecurity during the holy month of Ramadan.
The annual Ismaili CIVIC Ramadan Food Drive brought together volunteers from the Ismaili community and local partners to support families in Surrey, Burnaby, North Delta, Richmond, the TriCities, Nanaimo, and Victoria. Donations were collected at 10 Ismaili Jamatkhanas across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, as well as at multiple Save-On-Foods locations. The initiative concluded with a community celebration held on Monday, March 23 at the Richmond Food Bank.
“Food insecurity continues to rise at unprecedented levels,” said Hajira Hussain, Executive Director of the Richmond Food Bank. “In March 2025 alone, food banks across Canada recorded nearly 2.2 million visits, the highest number in history. Contributions like this play a critical role in supporting families who rely on food banks.”
According to figures from the Richmond Food Bank’s 2025 Impact Report, the donation is enough to support approximately 400 families or up to 1,500 individuals across the province.
Food donations from this year’s drive were delivered to the following organizations:
• Richmond Food Bank Society
• Surrey Food Bank
• SHARE Food Bank (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody)
• Muslim Food Bank (Surrey)
• Rainbow Kitchen Society (Victoria)
• Loaves and Fishes Food Bank (Nanaimo)

Held during Ramadan, a period marked by reflection, generosity, and service, the food drive reflects the Ismaili community’s long-standing commitment to volunteerism, compassion and strengthening quality of life in local communities.
Ismaili CIVIC extended its sincere gratitude to all volunteers, partners, and sponsors whose collaboration made this year’s initiative a success.
Ismaili CIVIC is a global program through which the Shia Ismaili Muslim community unites around its centuries-old tradition of voluntary service to improve quality of life and promote good citizenship. Rooted in the Islamic values of compassion, service, and care for the vulnerable, Ismaili CIVIC initiatives are carried out in partnership with municipalities, community organizations, and service groups around the world. Each year, Global Ismaili CIVIC Day — held on the fourth Sunday of September — launches a new cycle of service projects, including food drives, tree planting, blood donation campaigns, park cleanups, senior support, and student tutoring.
