The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in the Sahel, has claimed responsibility for the capture of a military position belonging to a local Donzo militia in the village of Bogola, located in Mali’s central Mopti region.
In a statement released through its media outlet Az-Zallaqa, the group said its fighters seized the position following an attack on the militia outpost. No details were provided regarding casualties or captured equipment.
The incident occurred in a region that has experienced years of violence involving armed groups, local militias, and government forces.
Who Are the Donzo?
The Donzo are traditionally hunter communities largely associated with the Dogon population of central Mali. Over recent years, some of these groups have evolved into armed self-defense militias operating in parts of Mopti and Bandiagara.
Human rights organizations have accused certain militia factions of abuses against civilians, while Malian authorities argue that such groups play a role in protecting communities from insurgent attacks.
A Conflict Beyond Security
Analysts note that the crisis in central Mali extends beyond the confrontation between jihadist groups and the state, encompassing long-standing disputes over land, resources, and community relations.
JNIM has increasingly targeted local militias while attempting to expand its influence among communities that feel marginalized or threatened, further complicating efforts to stabilize the region.
