Newcomers Masters FC saw their rosy world crumble yesterday when fellow Lilongwe-side Silver Strikers ended their good run in the FDH Premiership with a 3-0 whipping at Silver Stadium in the capital city.

Masters came into the match boasting a 100 percent record having won their first three matches, but by half-time the Bankers, top-flight league chmpions in 2024, were already in the comfort zone as they led 2-0.

Following the result, Silver now top the 16-team top-flight league with nine points from four matches. They are tied on points wit second-placed Blue Eagles also from Lilongwe and Masters, but the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored side has a better goal difference.

Silver opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when striker Andrew Joseph headed home a long throw-in from McDonald Lameck.

The visitors had their backs to the wall as Silver continued to pile pressure and it paid off in the 40th minute when a dangerously advancing Joseph was fouled in the box and up stepped Festus Duwe to convert the spot-kick and double Silver’s lead.

After the goal, Masters  FC coach Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda, who led Silver to end their 11-year flagship league title in 2024, stood motionless with his head hang in disappointment.

Masters came into the second half with renewed purpose as they fought to reduce the arrears, but instead, it was Silver who added the third with a classic goal from Lameck in added time.

After being set up by Levison Maganizo, Lameck beat a forest of defenders before releasing a powerful shot into the net.

In a post-match interview, Mponda said his charges put up an improved performance compared to previous matches “except for lapses in concentration”.

“The scoreline can be deceiving, it wasn’t a true reflection of the match. Of course, we also failed to take our chances. We need to bounce back,” he said.

Silver Strikers assistant coach Mapopa Musukwa said the players executed their game plan to perfection.

“We watched [Masters’ game against Luanar Mitundu and spotted their weaknesses which we capitalised on,” he said.

At Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza, Blantyre-based giants FCB Nyasa Bullets were frustrated by Red Lions of Zomba who held them to a goalless draw.

The Malawi Defence Force side matched the People’s Team pound-for-pound and with an ounce of luck, they could have carried the day as they created a couple of chances, but failed to make them count.

Bullets have dropped from second to fourth with eight points from four matches while Lions remain unbeaten with six points from four matches, having won once and drawn thrice.

At Dedza Stadium, hosts Goshen City Dedza Dynamos’ struggles continued as they lost 2-0 to Blue Eagles oif Lilongwe. They remain bottom of the table with a point from four matches
