“Michael” accomplishes exactly what it set out to do. It captures the genius and magic that made Michael Jackson (MJ) an international superstar. “Michael” depicts the pop star’s rise to fame. Casting spells over his legion of fans lead many to faint in his presence. What was so remarkable about Michael’s journey to fame was his creativity. I remember sitting next to Michael’s mother at an awards dinner. A bit agitated, Mrs. Jackson told me, “Quincy [Jones] gets a lot of credit for things Michael did.”
The Jackson Five is where it all started for MJ. The group was formed in Gary, Indiana, in 1964, by their abusive father Joe Jackson (Colman Domingo). The Jackson Five was the first group to debut with four consecutive number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “I Want You Back,” “ABC“, “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” So, the stage was set. As The Jackson Five became more successful, MJ’s creative juices began to flow. It would be only a matter of time before MJ set out on his own.

“Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Human Nature,” “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough,” and “Black or White” were among his solo scores. “Michael” delves into MJ’s thought processes and method of writing. It was quite interesting to see the mild-mannered Michael take control of his career. MJ made MTV change it racist policies and play his “Billie Jean” video. That paved the way for other Black music videos to air on MTV.

Although steadfast in demanding his proper place in the music industry, MJ did suffer from other insecurities and loneliness—like a lot of people. There was much left out of this biopic about MJ’s loves, and the sexual abuse allegations. But for those who want to enjoy MJ’s music, see some great cinematography and performances, “Michael” fits the bill.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film also stars Jaafar Jackson (Michael Jackson), Nia Long (Katherine Jackson), Laura Harrier (Suzanne de Passe), Larenz Tate (Berry Gordy), Juliano Valdi (young Michael Jackson), Kendrick Sampson (Quincy Jones), Miles Teller (John Branca), and KeiLyn Durrel Jones (Bill Bray).
