THE Zimbabwe senior women’s soccer team was eliminated from the Confederation of Southern African (COSAFA) Cup Friday after losing 4-2 on penalties to hosts South Africa in a semi-final match played at the New Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Mighty Warriors seemed to be heading to the final after staging a spirited performance, which saw them score 10 minutes into the game through Ethel Chinyerere, who fired in a long-range effort.
Banyana Banyana then replied 28 minutes later through Nthabiseng Majiya, bringing the match to a 1-1 draw going into the break.
The two sides came back into the second half looking for the winning goal, but they tactically stood firm as the match ended 1-1.
Going to the penalties, South Africa’s goalkeeper Casy Gordon made two saves to earn her side a 4-2 win and book a place in the finals.
Going to the final, South Africa will now face Namibia, who defeated Zambia 1-0 in the other semi-final match.
Zimbabwe and Zambia will fight for bronze in a third-place play off Sunday, and the teams will be hoping to win in order to avoid coming back home empty handed.
