MWANZA: THE Regional Administrative Secretary for Mwanza, Balandya Elikana, has said that environmental conservation and protection remain a key priority in the region’s development plans.
Elikana made the remarks today, May 29, 2026, during discussions with a team of experts from the Vice President’s Office who visited his office to present a progress report on preparations for the 2026 World Environment Day celebrations in the region.
He noted that Mwanza Region has been at the forefront of supporting government efforts in environmental conservation and management by encouraging communities to recognize the importance of environmental protection, including tree planting and cleanliness campaigns.
Elikana explained that, given the importance of environmental conservation, the regional secretariat, in collaboration with district councils, is preparing a strategy to encourage youth participation in forest conservation activities across various parts of the region.
“Mwanza has many forests, such as the Buhindi Forest in Buchosa District Council. We want such areas to be utilized effectively to benefit young people because they provide opportunities for employment creation,” said Elikana.
He also stated that the region recently hosted celebrations for Lake Victoria Day, aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation around Lake Victoria, which plays a major role in social and economic activities.
“These celebrations were part of implementing a resolution by the East African Community through the Lake Victoria Basin Commission. We held various activities, including the planting of approximately 2,500 trees at the Butimba water project area,” he added.
On his part, the leader of the expert team from the Vice President’s Office, Senior Forestry Officer Lucas Sabida, commended Mwanza Region for its continued efforts in educating communities about the importance of environmental conservation and protection.
