Mzukulu Brings Blxckie Into The Maskandi Fold With New Single “Too Much.” Maskandi and hip-hop collide on “Too Much,” a new collaboration between Mzukulu and Blxckie that opens Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, an ambitious compilation designed to explore the future of the genre while staying connected to its roots.

Released today, the track introduces listeners to a project that brings traditional Maskandi elements into conversation with contemporary South African sounds. “Too Much” is built around distinctive Maskandi guitar work, touches of Spanish guitar and a smooth saxophone melody, creating the backdrop for a love song centred on emotions that feel almost impossible to contain.

The song captures that feeling through its central idea of kuningi, or having so much love that words and numbers cannot quite measure it. The lyrics use the scale of FNB Stadium and Moses Mabhida Stadium as a playful reference point, suggesting that even spaces of that magnitude would not be enough to contain the depth of the emotion being expressed.

Mzukulu brings his soulful vocal presence to the collaboration, while Blxckie adds the melodic style and edge that have become central to his sound. Their contrasting approaches complement each other, allowing “Too Much” to move naturally between Maskandi storytelling and contemporary hip-hop influences.

The single also serves as the first taste of Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, a unity-driven project developed by Ntuthuko Mtshali in partnership with Durban Media House and Africori Music Group. The compilation brings together established Maskandi names such as Mzukulu, Dr Buselaphi, Saliwa, Jaiva Zimnike and Menzi with artists from hip-hop, Afro-soul and other genres.

Among the additional contributors is Sjava, alongside Lowfeye of The Qwellers, further underlining the project’s intention to create new connections between artists and musical worlds that do not always share the same space.

For Mzukulu, the collaboration arrives during an important period in his career after being named SAMA Best Male Artist of the Year. His recent work has continued to contribute to the wider reach of Maskandi, while Blxckie is carving out his next chapter as an independent artist following his departure from Def Jam.

“Too Much” therefore represents more than an unexpected pairing. It sets the tone for a compilation that views Maskandi as a living genre capable of embracing new influences while preserving the guitar-driven sound, storytelling and cultural identity at its core.
