ON March 6, New Westminster Police Department officers learned of a 9-1-1 caller reporting a man with a firearm in the 1200-block of 6th Avenue. An NWPD drone was launched to support the officers responding to this call.
Immediately after launching the drone, the operator saw a man matching the suspect description. The drone operator relayed information to New Westminster Police Department patrol and specialty units, who moments later arrested the man without incident. Charges relating to firearms are being considered.
“The drone operator provided real time information that helped officers quickly locate the suspect,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “This allowed our officers to assess risk, and make a safe arrest.”
The New Westminster Police began using drones in early February. If you have information about suspicious behavior in your neighbourhood, they ask that you reach out to them at 604-525-5411. If you are witnessing a crime in progress, fear for your safety, or the safety of others, call 9-1-1.
