By Zoila Palma: No councilor candidate from Santa Elena was selected to the PUP’s municipal slate following the party’s convention in Cayo, where delegates voted to determine the team that will contest the 2027 municipal elections for San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
Of the nine candidates who contested the convention, six secured positions on the final slate. Edel Espat topped the polls with 194 votes, followed by Matthew Preston with 192, Joe Awe with 142, Nadime Hegar with 130, Eliu Yacab with 118 and Nazim Lisbey with 110 votes.
The results mean both Santa Elena candidates, Omar Rodriguez and Danielle Rodriguez, did not secure a spot on the PUP slate.
Rodriguez received 66 votes, while Danielle Rodriguez garnered 110 votes. Lisbey also received 110 votes, resulting in a tie that was settled by a coin toss, with Lisbey winning the deciding toss.
The outcome leaves Aaron Mai as the PUP’s mayoral candidate, with Edel Espat, Matthew Preston, Joe Awe, Nadime Hegar, Eliu Yacab and Nazim Lisbey joining him on the municipal team.
