(AURN News) — Today, May 25, 2026, marks six years since George Floyd was killed. H3 was 46 years old.
On May 25, 2020, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Floyd died.
Chauvin was later convicted of murder and manslaughter. Three other former officers were also convicted in connection with Floyd’s death.
Floyd’s death sparked protests across the United States and around the world over police conduct and racism, leading many cities to change policies regarding police use of force.
The killing changed how the country and much of the world discuss law enforcement and civil rights. It remains central to conversations about police accountability.
While 2020 sparked a major racial reckoning, later years have also shown a pullback from some of that initial progress. Rest in peace, George Floyd.
