Lusanda Dumke was honoured with a minute’s silence before the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup as South Africa opened their campaign with a commanding win over Madagascar.

Nairobi, Kenya (25 May 2026) – Before the ball was kicked at the 2026 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup in Nairobi, there was already an emotional moment that reminded many just how much the women’s game in South Africa has grown.

A minute’s silence was held in honour of former Springbok Women captain Lusanda Dumke, with tributes pouring in for a player remembered not only for her leadership on the field, but for the impact she had on women’s rugby across the continent.

Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah described Dumke as someone whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations, while SA Rugby President Mark Alexander praised her courage, resilience and humility throughout her career.

“A symbol of courage, leadership and resilience… she plays with heart and humility,” said Alexander.

The tribute created a powerful moment ahead of the tournament opener, as players, officials and supporters paused to honour one of South African rugby’s respected figures.

And when the action finally got underway, South Africa delivered a performance worthy of the occasion.

The defending champions opened their Rugby Africa Women’s Cup title defence with an emphatic 64-5 victory over Madagascar, laying down an early marker in Nairobi.

Hosts Kenya also got their campaign off to a strong start with a 43-10 victory over Uganda in front of an energetic home crowd, setting up what already looks like an exciting tournament ahead.

But for many South African supporters, the most meaningful moment of the day came before kick-off as African rugby paused together to honour Lusanda Dumke and the legacy she leaves behind.
