A retirement sanctuary for older cats has received a heartwarming upgrade – and the photos of the kitties enjoying it will make your whole day!
Malmesbury, South Africa (01 June 2026) – If you haven’t yet heard of alCATraz, allow us to introduce you to one of the most wholesome places, ever!
Created by the Lucky Lucy Foundation – a Malmesbury-based animal rescue organisation founded in 2010 after its founders rescued a pregnant dog named Lucy who had been tied to railway tracks in Wellington – alCATraz is exactly what its punny name suggests…

It’s a retirement sanctuary for older cats, where those who have spent too much of their lives in survival mode are finally given the freedom to just be cats again.
There are shade-filled gardens to wander through, herb beds to sniff, enrichment to keep curious minds busy, and safe, peaceful spaces to curl up and nap in the sun. For so many of these cats, it’s the first time they’ve ever truly had it all.
Recently, AlCATraz’ outdoor space underwent some upgrades, after the recent storms in the Western Cape had caused damage. The upgrades were a labour of love brought to life by Nico Bruyns, a long-time supporter who first helped build the space. His craftsmanship and deep care for the cats has resulted in a space the cats feel the most comfort in.
The newly upgraded outdoor space has been dubbed ‘The Cuddle Puddle Lounge;. Named partly for the adorable cuddle puddles the cats form together every single day, and partly after the recent storms left much of the area thoroughly soaked.

The Lucky Lucy Foundation says the transformation has been a journey years in the making, from wooden wendy houses to a newly built cattery and now to an inspiring, cat-centred haven filled with stimulation, adventure, comfort and hiding spots for those who need a moment alone.
“When you stand back and watch the cats enjoying every single part of it — exploring, sunbathing, climbing, playing, resting and simply existing peacefully, you realise just how incredibly lucky and blessed we are to be able to give these animals everything they deserve.”
The upgrade was made possible through the generosity of sponsors and donors, and the foundation wants every single one of them to know that they have played the biggest role in creating healing spaces, joyful memories and a sanctuary that changes lives.
