High School Art Club Brings Joy to Walls of Babies Safe Home

The littlest residents of a Gqeberha safe home now have the most colourful walls to look at, thanks to a group of very talented high schoolers!

Gqeberha, South Africa (07 May 2026) – The babies at Thand’usana Babies Safe Home have new magical company on their walls. Whales. Elephants. Crabs. Lions. Starfish. Toucans. And so much colour ready to spark all the little smiles.

The learners of the Pearson Art Club at Hoërskool Pearson spent some time painting two full murals at the safe home. One is of an underwater world filled with ocean creatures, and the other is a wild African landscape with animals and trees.

Two blank walls have been completely transformed into good things that bring positivity into a space where babies feel safe and protected after a difficult start in life.

“We are so proud of the Pearson Art Club for bringing colour, joy, and hope to the walls of Thand’usana Babies Safe Home,” shares the school. “Our learners recently gave of their time and creativity to paint a beautiful mural for the little ones at the Safe Home — children who have come from incredibly difficult circumstances and deserve spaces filled with warmth and happiness.”

Thand’usana is a committed safe home in Gqeberha that cares for abandoned, abused and neglected babies from birth to three years old, giving them a safe place while social workers work to find them a permanent home through adoption, foster care, or family reunification. At any one time, up to six babies are in their care, including HIV-infected infants.

Now those babies get to grow and heal surrounded by elephants and crocodiles and big friendly whales.

“Small acts can make a big difference — and this is one we’ll remember for a long time.” the school adds.
