Onyango challenges East Africa to deliver an unprecedented AFCON 2027

With exactly one year to go until the historic 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ugandan football icon Denis Onyango has challenged co-hosts Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania to deliver an unforgettable tournament.

For the first time in history, the three nations will jointly host the continent’s flagship event under the unifying Swahili banner, Pamoja, scheduled to run from June 19 to July 27, 2027.

Speaking to CAFOnline, the 41-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper expressed immense pride, noting that the global spotlight will serve as a vital launchpad for local talent.

“Hosting the biggest football show on the continent will provide massive opportunities for football in East Africa to develop,” Onyango said. “It will expose our homegrown talent to scouts from some of the biggest leagues in the world.”

Following the region’s successful hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), confidence is sky-high. However, Onyango insists that the Pamoja hosts shouldn’t just look to replicate past tournaments—they need to completely eclipse them.

“We have to give Africa our best show,” the veteran shot-stopper asserted. “This is the first time three countries are co-hosting AFCON. We must be ready to not only match what previous hosts have done, but do even better so the world knows East Africa truly delivered.”
