Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR renew rivalry in the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League when they lock horns at the Loftus Versfield stadium in Pretoria.
The two sides will be eager to pick the first leg advantage ahead of the decisive clash in a week’s time in Morocco with the Brazilians under more pressure since they are playing at home on Sunday.
After losing the final last year, Sundowns will hope to make amends and their Portuguese tactician Miguel Cardoso says they will give everything to win.
“We will give the best in order to win it,” Cardoso said ahead of the clash.
“It is a moment where we have to do things in the proper way. There is still the second match where everything will be decided and that is the mental state that we are in.”
Cardoso acknowledged that the away-goals rule could also shape the tactical approach of the two finalists, especially with the decisive second leg set for Rabat.
“In the Champions League, the away goals rule is a factor and it is important that we look for a positive result,” he explained.
“Conceding at home has an impact on the away match but we want to make a good game.”
For AS FAR coach Alexandre Santos, the aim is to get a good result and try to win it home.
“The final is not just one match, but two,” Santos told reporters in Pretoria ahead of the encounter.
“The Royal Army always plays to win. We know we are facing one of the most important clubs on the continent over the last decade, but we came here believing in ourselves and in our ability.”
With two experienced squads, two ambitious Portuguese coaches and little separating the finalists on paper, the first leg in Pretoria promises to deliver another memorable night in African club football.
