THE new and expanded Moody Elementary is complete, ensuring more students in downtown Port Moody will have the spaces they need to grow and learn, says the Province.

“This school is going to make a real difference for families in Port Moody. Kids will have a better place to learn, parents will have easier access to the supports they need, and the new daycare means families can get more done in one place,” said Rick Glumac, MLA for Port Moody-Burquitlam, on Friday. “It’s the kind of space that works for the whole community, not just during school hours, but all day long.”

* The two-storey Moody Elementary school, a seismic replacement and expansion, adds 270 seismically safer seats and 115 new seats for students.

* The new seats help meet the enrolment needs of the community and ensure kids have the classrooms they need to thrive.

* Built on the same site as Moody Middle school, the new location allows for an easier transition for students from elementary to middle school and reduces pressures for families co-ordinating pickup and dropoff at both schools.

* To further support families, the school includes a child care centre with space for as many as 60 kids, including infants, toddlers and school-age children.

* New recreation spaces include a larger gymnasium, a new playground and multi-use outdoor courts.

“Schools are at the heart of our communities,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “By building this new elementary school alongside Moody Middle, we’re creating a central hub that supports enrolment growth and strengthens connections for families and students.”

Since 2017, the Province has approved more than $454 million to create more than 2,600 new seats and 1,375 seismically safer seats for students in the Coquitlam School District.

* It includes new classrooms in neighbourhoods throughout Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam to help meet enrolment growth and ensure kids have the spaces they need to thrive, closer to home.

* The investments include more than $32 million for the seismic replacement and expansion of Moody Elementary school.

* Additional funding for the new Moody Elementary school includes $5 million in capital funding from the Coquitlam School District and more than $1.5 million from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund for the child care centre.

“The Coquitlam School District Board of Education is grateful for the Province of British Columbia’s support in delivering seismically safe schools for our students,” said Michael Thomas, chair, Coquitlam Board of Education. “The new Moody Elementary is not only built to the highest safety standards, but thoughtfully designed to enhance learning, with features such as adjustable lighting, abundant natural light, muted colours, and innovative, flexible spaces.”

Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care, said: “Moody Elementary will be a place where students feel grounded, supported, and ready to learn, while families have access to the services they rely on close to home. By bringing education, child care, and community together in one space, this school reflects the strong sense of connection that defines Port Moody.”
