On July 13 at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott,
His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Republic, received a delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO) led by its Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Following the meeting, the UN official expressed his satisfaction with the success of his visit to Mauritania, describing his discussions with the President of the Republic as highly productive. He noted that the meeting provided an opportunity to congratulate the President on Mauritania’s achievements in advancing universal health coverage.
He also commended Mauritania for successfully eliminating trachoma and praised the measures taken to provide health insurance for workers in the informal sector, which have helped expand access to healthcare services.
He stressed that the measures implemented in the health sector reflect the Mauritanian government’s commitment to strengthening the performance of this vital sector.
He added that his meeting with the Minister of Health also focused on the partnership between the two sides in the areas of maternal health, oncology, and digitalization.
He further noted that the Center for Cardiac Diseases and Surgery, which he visited earlier in the day, is carrying out commendable work by performing around 200 open-heart surgeries each year. Previously, patients had to travel abroad to undergo such procedures.
The WHO Director-General concluded by reaffirming the WHO’s commitment to continuing its cooperation with Mauritania and providing constant support.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Nani Chrougha, Minister in Charge of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic; Mr. Tidjani Thiam, Minister of Health; and Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Ghaber, Advisor at the Presidency of the Republic.
