The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) has officially reopened its fully renovated Southern Campus in Beanefield, Vieux Fort, marking a transformative moment for tertiary education in Saint Lucia. Backed by funding from the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Saint Lucia, the upgraded facility is set to expand access to higher education while preparing students for the demands of a rapidly evolving workforce.
Far more than a facelift, the campus has been completely reimagined with cutting-edge smart classrooms, interactive technology, and a high-flex learning model that allows students to attend classes in person, live online, or asynchronously. The flexible approach is designed to accommodate working professionals, young parents, and others balancing education with personal and professional commitments.
The revitalized campus will place a strong emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), alongside programmes focused on digital transformation, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and the green and blue economies. SALCC leaders say the institution will also work directly with businesses and communities across the south to ensure its programmes reflect real labour market demands and create graduates equipped with practical, job-ready skills.
For Minister within the Ministry with responsibility for Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Continuing Education and Digital Transformation, Danny Butcher, the reopening was especially meaningful. Reflecting on his family’s connection to the institution, he shared that his mother worked as a janitor at the Southern Extension from 1992 to 2008, helping to support her seven children.
He also acknowledged the longstanding educational imbalance between northern and southern Saint Lucia, noting that many students were once forced to endure costly commutes or abandon their dreams of higher education altogether.
“When you leave here, you do not only leave with an associate degree. You do not leave with only a professional certificate. You do not only leave with a bachelor’s. Your character would have changed. You would have deep-rooted values that will change you for generations to come.”
The reopening also highlights the resilience of the institution’s staff, led by Campus Director Dr. Dilys Souk, who ensured academic programmes continued despite the challenges posed during the renovation period.
With state-of-the-art facilities, flexible learning options, and a renewed focus on workforce development, the Southern Campus is expected to become a major driver of educational and economic growth for Vieux Fort and the wider southern region.
