School bag search lands San Pedro man with cocaine charge

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A San Pedro Town man is facing a drug charge after police say a late-night stop in the Boca del Rio Area turned up suspected cocaine in the front pocket of the school bag he was carrying.

According to the Belize Police Department, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at about 9:15 p.m., officers on mobile patrol near a grocery shop in the Boca del Rio Area observed a man walking on the street with a dark blue school bag on his back. Upon seeing the marked police mobile, police reported, the man hurriedly hid something behind his back.

Finding the movement suspicious, an officer exited the vehicle, identified himself, and informed the man that a search would be conducted for drugs and ammunition. A search of his person found nothing incriminating, but checks inside the school bag, with the aid of a flashlight, produced a small transparent ziplock bag containing a white powdery substance, suspected to be cocaine, in the bag’s front pocket.

The man was shown the find, informed of the offence, cautioned, arrested, and escorted to the San Pedro Police Station with the suspected drugs in his view at all times.

At the station, he was identified as 24-year-old Edi Anderi Aban, a labourer of the San Juan Area, San Pedro Town. The suspected cocaine was weighed in his presence on a scale shown to read zero beforehand, amounting to 0.5 grams, then sealed in a labelled envelope which he signed voluntarily. He was served his rights in custody and granted a telephone call.

On Friday, July 24, 2026, police formally arrested and charged Aban with possession of controlled drugs. Cautioned once more, he chose to remain silent.
