The Florida Democrat had faced growing bipartisan pressure to step down after an initial report from the committee found “substantial evidence” that she committed multiple ethics and campaign‑finance violations. Some members had already begun publicly calling for her expulsion including a growing number of Democrats.

Before the committee convened, a resignation letter she addressed to Speaker Mike Johnson was read aloud, immediately shifting the tone of the meeting. In the letter, Cherfilus‑McCormick said she reached her decision after “careful reflection and prayer,” adding that stepping aside was the best path forward for her constituents and the institution.

Ranking Member Michael DeSaulnier of Mississippi, who read the letter into the record, emphasized that the committee’s two‑year investigation was thorough and methodical. He pushed back on claims that the panel had rushed to judgment, saying the process was “very deliberate” and complicated by the volume of allegations and financial records involved.

Speaker Johnson had previously stated that he believed expulsion was warranted based on the committee’s preliminary findings. Her resignation effectively ends the disciplinary process but opens the door for a special election to fill the seat.
